The Explorers Guild is a country dedicated to seeking out new peoples and resources, developing frontiers, and locating new lands for the benefits of all of Dargarth. It is the first and oldest country in Dargarth. Its borders reach from the Briarwood Jungle in the west to the central swamps that serve as the Guild's eastern border. It stretches south across the continent and includes the Isle of Narscin.
Its original mission as a mapping and scouting society has since evolved into one of safe governance and protection of local peoples. The Guild's original directives included:

#Chart unknown lands, and seek out their inhabitants
#Discover and name the beasts of the world, that we may know their number and shape
#Understand the magic that is to be found elsewhere, so we may build on our knowledge
#Tame the wilds of the ends of the world, and discover what lies beyond the horizon

These principles still motivate many of the Guild's activities, and exploration continues to be the primary focus of the Guild.

The Guild operates as an ad hoc meritocracy. This nature means long term planning is difficult, as there is no central authority. It operates a sizable navy, primarily to transport expeditions across bodies of water.

Country History
The Explorers Guild originated outside the realm of Dargarth, and originally came to its shores in a shipwrecked expedition. Organized abroad, the ship was blown off course and wrecked on the shores of Dargarth. The expedition formed a community at the location, calling its landing spot Newholme. The country was based on the Guild's values, and integrated native Dargarthians from the start.

Following its charter, the Explorers Guild sent expeditions out across the continent. It soon found new neighbors with the Briarwood Clan in the jungles of the west, and Albion in the Albioberge Mountains to the south.

When the nation of Narscinia collapsed, the Explorers Guild stepped into the void and provided aid for the people of Narscin. The Isle was eventually incorporated into the Explorers Guild as a feudal holding under Baron Arminius. Rich gold and silver mines were found on the island, and two large cities developed. Today it is the most densely populated area of Dargarth. The trade route between Newholme and Narscin forms the backbone of the Guild's economy. Most of the trade is seaborne, passing around the Briarwood Jungle in the west. Riverborne trade is also significant for the Guild.

After the collapse of Albion, the Explorers Guild expanded southwards into its former lands. It has maintained peaceful relations with the successor states that claimed territory of the defunct country. The Guild uses fortifications and the Albioberge Mountains to defend its eastern and southern borders.

The Guild holds significant lands along the Bay of Langer, probably the most heavily contested waters in all of Dargarth. It has attempted to stay neutral in the frequent disputes between the Isles of Langerhausen and Legion. The Guild has managed to maintain free passage for its ships even tension between its neighbors are escalated.

With the discovery of lands in the east, the Explorers Guild quickly organized an dispatched an expedition to these lands. It's exploratory efforts are currently focused on the north western island.

Associated Organizations
Guild members have created a number of successful institutions and enterprises. These are not formally a part of the Explorers Guild, but they often liaise with it or have shared goals.
Valdar hails from the land known as Regnum, a country constantly at war with itself. 3 factions in 3 different environments. Dark Elves and Orcs controlled the deserts, High Elves and Woodland Humans controlled the forests and plains, and Nords and Dwarves controlled the icy tundras. Valdar was a Nordic ranger, often ridiculed by his fellows for choosing stealth and exploration over war. After a long time of being thrown recklessly into battles, Valdar decided to leave his kind behind. He stole a small rowboat and traveled through the frigid north to a land that was only rumored to exist. That land was the First Kingdom of Dargarth.
He fought and explored independently until he was approached by The Explorers Guild, and was invited to join them. He has since roamed the land, sharing his findings with the Guild. Because of his loyalty, he was rewarded with a castle in the mountains that lay near the center of the Explorer's Guild's land.
Valdar acted as chain on the Explorer's Guild's team for Skullbowl IV.
Valdar accepted a position as squire in the service of Kendric Flamehands and in recent times a twisted form of his former self has been seen at Kendric's side. It seems his loyalty followed the Magus into death.

The sea was the deepest red I have ever seen on the day I sailed from Vartix that was. A childhood, a family, a country, a world lost to the cruel and implacable waves. Sometimes when I dream back on that day the water is stained with blood and not the fading sun.
Bards and braggarts both tell tales and none of them are true. I will only tell you true stories here for I am no bard and no braggart. My name is Kendric Flamehands. Currently First Mage of Dargarth, Headmaster of the Academy Arcana Bellum and to the best of my knowledge the only mage blooded man, woman or child in the world. As a youth I was a somewhat fumble-spelled apprentice with a penchant for burning my spellbooks when practicing charms of evocation.
My life changed entirely two years ago. During the The High Magi of Vartix reached to far into the darker places beyond and whatever they summoned, or whatever followed them back, was beyond even their awesome power to command and contain. Eventually they made the terrible decision to trap whatever they had unleashed in the darkness beneath the trackless ocean. They destroyed Vartix that was, sinking that lost land beneath the sea. Now only a handful of us, blessedly absent from the continent during its demise, remain.
Chance had placed me on board a northern pirate vessel hired by the Vartissian navy to help root out a band of more local pirates. Little more than an apprentice I was only supposed to see to basic spells for the ship until a more qualified magus could be located. After the continent sunk behind us we abandoned that mission. We sailed on short supplies for months, then on no supplies for days. The crew of the Northern Fist and I were pushed as seamen and I as a sorcerer daily. Finally we were able to make a brief stop at a strand of islands where a nation of soft spoken elves greeted us hospitably and told us stories their people had of a great land to the West. More months at sea, more months of fish, empty horizons and the smell of salt finally brought me to Dargarth.
Since coming to this land I have slain dragons, cast down necromancers and plague spreading warlocks. My service has been courted by near every nation of Dargarth. I have established an academy for the Magi of the realm to train and seek guidance. All this and my story has only just begun.

----

Sir Kendric, newly knighted, knelt before the statue of the Maker. Though he was not a religious man, his lips moved in fervent prayer. The words that flowed from his tongue were strange, lilting sounds, a dead language that only he knew. His knights vigil had gone through the day and night without slumber or rest. Dawn was nearing when the vision struck.
A voice that rang with melody of ten-thousand thousands of voices in harmony. "Kendric, you kneel in a place of honor. Yet you are unworthy." It was his father's voice that he heard, but somehow it was also his grandfather's, and his great grand sire, whom Kendric only remembered in soft warm way of a childhood well loved. It was his mothers voice, and his grandmothers, and every mother that had sired a child of the line of Vartissia for the thousand years that dead country had reigned. Before this voice the Archmagus trembled in fear.
"Speak, ancestors, though I fear I am unworthy, hold forth your guidance to me. I am not a holy man, but I will accept your decree." Tears streamed down his face and the mighty mage trembled.
"There is a Darkness within you, though you do so ardently seek it in others. A corruption that is growing, and lest your purge yourself of it you will be consumed, as all of Vartissia was consumed." The last of us will be gone. These final words, unspoken but understood, chimed through the air.
"You have a different task, and you stand with half your foot upon the threshold of destiny, Kendric. Open your academy to Blade and Book. Take up the mantle of teacher. This is your calling, and it is one you cannot serve so long as you are filled with bloodlust."
"Ancestors, I accept your judgement." The words were barely a whisper when they finally left Kendric's mouth.
"Then RIse Kendric Flamehands, a true Mage-knight."
Kendric has a strong distaste for Orcs, Goblins, and monster-kin of all sort. It has previously led him to blows with the Mardurians and a brief lived border skirmish with Mardur inspired by his Natural Laws of Magic continually simmers on the boiling point. There is little doubt that when the summer comes and the guild is prepared there will be hostilities. While the presence of a monster nation may be tolerable, it is clear from Kendric's actions that the Death Knight Thrax is an abomination that will not stand.

----
Graveborn - So called since his return as a lich.

[former] Flamehands - Kendric has made great use of fire spells on the field of battle

First Mage of Dargarth - The first mage, though not the first magic user, upon the fields of Dargarth

Mage-Knight: Assumed as a natural title along with his knighthood.

Archmagus of the Academy Arcana Bellum - Founder of the Academy Arcana Bellum and head of the school, he is also the teacher for new Mages.

[former] Warden of the West - The Academy sits astride the western coast and Kendric claims that land as under his protection.

Dragonslayer - During his first forays into the land Kendric slew a dragon during the Battle of the Dragon King. He has since slain many more.

[former] Dwarf friend of the Bronzebeard Clan - The dwarves of the Bronzebeard Clan have long owed a debt to Kendric and counted him a companion. The presence of Marek at the academy speaks to this bond. Since his return he has fore sworn the company of the Bronzebeard dwarves.

Gold Medalist 2012 and 2016 Dargarthian Spell Duels

[former] Dagger Champion of Dargarth - a title initially seized at the founders day games, 2012. Passed to Jarek Briarwood 2014.

Fought in the Battle of the Wicked Delta and survived.
----

Vanished from the land in DY5. At the same time the Academy Arcana Bellum was struck by some sort of supernatural force. The burnt wreckage showed clear signs of magical battle and the unsettling marks of infernal creatures.

Kendric has been seen stalking the lands, a horrid visage of what he once was. He has shown particular enmity to the Knights of Erzoth.
I thought I'd seen battle and blood before, but all the skirmishes with the guild I'd been in were nothing. I didn't know a damn thing until that hunt. Something had been making off with cattle from the smallfolks, something nasty that walked on two feet. There were six of us that went up the trail. We'd only seen one set of prints, and we thought we'd be okay. Damn thing about trolls though, is they're clever, and they can smell better than some dogs. Creature was waiting for us, dropped a bolder right in the middle when we hit a narrow pass. I'll never forget the sound when it hit Ciric. This crunching, and then he was gone. Tumbling down the mountain, breaking as he went. Then the troll came in earnest. It dropped on the back pair, while I was in the lead. Me and the captain took the thing in its back, but the damn beast didn't die until it had ripped my other comrades apart.

Kendric: Changed "inning" to "period" and tidied up a bit about scoring.

Jugging (also known as Jugger) is often described as "medieval style football." It utilizes padded safety equipment, two teams, a ball (known as the "skull"), and two goals. A gong, drum, or other way of keeping a beat is utilized to count time (known as "stones").

There are five positions per team, with an additional two alternates allowed. While variations exist, the basic positions are:
*Quick: armed only with a dagger, the Quick is the only position which can deliberately touch the Skull.
*Chain: the chain is generally armed with dual flails, or a flail and a medium/short sword.
*Shield: armed with sword/club and a non-tower shield
*Heavy: armed with a two-handed weapon (such as spear, glaive, or great sword)
*Slash: armed with two swords or clubs

The field is generally 100ft long by 50ft wide (though this is normally eyeballed during casual play, or established per-existing boundaries are used, such as walls in an indoor game).

Each period consists of 100 "stones," with each "stone" lasting approximately 2 seconds. The game continues until a given score is achieved. The most common score is 5pts, but tournament games have been known to be played to 3 pts. If two periods finish with neither team scoring the three to five points, the team who is ahead at the end declared as the winner. In the event of a tie one additional period is played, with the first team who scores declared as the winner.

After an period the players switch sides of the field. Alternates may be subbed in after a point is scored, or at the end of an inning (or in the event of an injury).

Standard Dargarthian rules of play include:
*players (aside from the Quick) start on their goal line
*players may not move until one of the Quicks touches the Skull.
*the Heavy cannot cross the half-court line

Some variations are:
*two slashes per team, in place of a chain and a slash (because of the common lack of flails)
*the heavy may cross the half-court line
*the heavy can shield break (if wielding a red)
*a circle in the middle of the field; only the Quicks may enter the circle until the skull is removed
:*Quicks may not take daggers into the center circle at round start

The "official" Dargarth jugging rules can be found here, though it should be noted that these rules are normally modified in some fashion (such as shortened counts after Death/Wounding/Stunned).

The official Dargarth jugging tournament is known as the Skullbowl. It is a yearly event which has so far been held in the winter, though Dargarth tends to jug throughout the year (especially in the nice seasons).

Jugging was first introduced in the movie The Blood of Heroes. Since then it has spread across the world in several independent movements. In Europe and Australia actual amateur sport leagues exist, while in America the sport as become popular with medieval combat and LARP organizations, most notably Amtgard, though other groups such as Belegarth and the SCA also occasionally participate.

----

Flamehands - Kendric has made great use of fire spells on the field of battle

First Mage of Dargarth - The first mage, though not the first magic user, upon the fields of Dargarth

Mage-Knight: Assumed as a natural title along with his knighthood.

Archmagus of the Academy Arcana Bellum - Founder of the Academy Arcana Bellum and head of the school, he is also the teacher for new Mages.

Warden of the West - The Academy sits astride the western coast and Kendric claims that land as under his protection.

Dragonslayer - During his first forays into the land Kendric slew a dragon during the Battle of the Dragon King

Dwarf friend of the Bronzebeard Clan - The dwarves of the Bronzebeard Clan have long owed a debt to Kendric and counted him a companion. The presence of Marek at the academy speaks to this bond.

Gold Medalist 2012 Dargarthian Spell Duels

Dagger Champion of Dargarth - a title initially seized at the founders day games, 2012.
Founding: The Academy Arcana Bellum was founded to fulfill many roles. It acts as a guild to protect lawful mages, a council that decides when to lend magical aid to worthy countries. The Academy is also a watchdog organization, hunting down those who violate the Academies rules regarding the use of magic (see: Accords of the Natural Law of Magic).

Banner: The Academy Arcana Bellum uses an Purpure field with a emblem of a Sable hand encased in Tenny flames at its center to mark them as sworn men of Kendric's.

The Academy Arcana Bellum seeks supreme understanding of the magical arts. We wish all mages, druids and clerics to one day proudly claim to have received their training from the Academy and that such students will abide by the guiding precepts the Academy gives for all spell casters.

The Academy is a neutral organization, however the headmaster Kendric Flamehands has been known to harbor ill will towards Mardur, and has previously denounced both Legion and Bitter Peak for their invasions of Langerhausen.

The Academy was founded to provide a home for Mages, Druids and Clerics.
As the summer months wound towards winter a curious invitation was sent to each of the nations of Dargarth. Champions from every castle and clan hall were called to a midsummer festival being held by two brothers, Tandrei the Elder and Sarthas the Wild. Long ago these brothers had quarreled over an artifact of tremendous power, the Chalice of Memory. In a rage one of the brothers slew the other and spilled a few drops of blood into the waters of the Chalice. Its magic tainted by kin slaying the Chalice, instead of granting a boon, bestowed a curse upon the family. From that day forward they remembered every death they suffered.
A hundred years passed from that fateful conflict to reach the summons the brothers sent. Those who answered the call found that here, in this hundredth year, the stars had aligned and the ley lines shifted in such a way that the curse could be broken, or altered. While the brothers continued their battle, the first of Splintervale, Tanith Lorn, had found love in a most unlikely place. A daughter of Tandrei the Elder who he met in the woods on his rangings both beautiful and kind.
Against the wishes of their fathers this pair was wed. The outraged Tandrei the elder was slain by Tanith Lorn and Sarthas the wild was dispossessed as clan head. The curse of the Chalice of memory had been broken, but unfortunately this was not the only evil in the forest.
With so many outsiders in the woods it was almost to be expected there would be a number amongst them with greed in their hearts. There were a number of idols throughout the woods that were stolen, sacred wards of the elves that locked ancient undead monstrosities into their burial chambers. With these upset the dead began to rise to trouble the living.
There was also a savaged knight who warned that the Doom of Langer had been seen in the area, though the beast never manifested that any adventurers saw.

Blizzard Mages have AR1, cast 2 ice storm spelllballs, 1 lighting bolt spellball, and wield no shields.
Basics
Blizzard Mages are spell casters who harness the elements of winters ice to destroy their foes. Their tenacity in confronting the cold gives them a natural durability in battle, though some wear thick animal hides if their magic is not powerful enough.

Behaviour
The old man stoked our camp fire and threw two thick logs onto the blaze. His face was a hard line and eyes as grey and cold as the snow around us cast about the flickering shadows as though searching for something. What I could not say. After a few long moments he took a seat a pair of paces back from the now brightly crackling fire. It was several long moments during which I dared not speak that passed before the old guide answered my question.
"You wish to hear of my battle with the White Caller? That is why you hired me, isn't it? I'm not really a guide. So be it. It is an old tale told many times and I don't suppose telling it one more time will matter. I can't say I care for the surroundings though." The guide cast his gaze once more beyond the circle of firelight then pulled his furs closer to him and inched closer to the warmth. Even from where I sat a goodly distance further than my guide I could feel the sting of the fire's warmth.
"I was much younger when it happened. Been on a few trips and thought I knew my way around the ice. I didn't know dung from dirt. We were in a pass I'd scouted, seldom used, possibly unknown. We found out why our second night in camp."
"The snow had fallen thick throughout the second day in the pass and we were forced to call a halt well before night fell. The snow fell and at first it seemed gentle, a thick flurry that would pass in hours, then we could make our way through. The winds picked up as the hours lengthened to twilight and before long the gentle flurry had become a raging blizzard and we all huddled together and prayed. That was when the White Caller struck."
"We had no sentries. No man or beast could approach us through the gale, or so we thought, our thoughts turned purely to our own survival. It was utter shock when Rimmick fell, crimson staining the driving white around us. Not a man amongst us mustered the wit to move until he cut down Theris, that's when I grabbed for my hatchet. Then he said... something. The words seemed to twist and ring oddly on his tongue, half understood but alien, if that can make any sense at all. A blue haze formed around me and I could not move."
"He struck down my two remaining companions without pity. I could but watch, seized immobile by his magic. Once he had killed them he wiped his blade upon Rimmick's already frozen corpse and approached me. 'If you live, tell all that this pass is mine, and I will not tolerate trespassers'."
"And that, magus, is all I know of the White Callers."

- From the journal of Kendric Flamehands, First Mage of Dargarth

Combat
Blizzard mages vary in ability in combat, but do share several common tactics. Generally they will charge into battle flinging their ice storm spells first to disable the strongest opponents while saving the lightning bolt to break a troublesome shield or disable or kill an exposed opponent. Their magical toughness does not put them on par with a true armored warrior but does grant them a measure of protection from lighter blows.

Deep within the forests of Blackwood the bandit king grew restless. The wild places were growing fewer and further between with each passing season and soon the roguish lord would be called to task. So it was he came to his decision. The Bandit Lord would forge a kingdom for himself, and his first act would be to secure his coffers. Agents of the bandit king went out to every corner of Dargarth and robbed the taxmen of each country. With their ill gotten gold in hand the upjumped highwaymen fled back to the trackless Blackwood Forest.
Enraged the heroes and magi of every nation converged upon Blackwood, slaying goblin warrens, black knights, blind giants and more before finally defeating the Bandit King himself.

An explanation of my titles:
Flamehands
First Mage of Dargarth - The first mage, though not the first magic user, upon the fields of Dargarth
Archmagus of the Academy Arcana Bellum - Founder of the Academy Arcana Bellum and head of its school for Mages.
