New page

The Underdark is a term sometimes used to refer to the mysterious world beneath the sunlit lands of Dargarth. Very little is known about the subterranean regions beneath Dargarth; even many of the night dwelling races such as orcs and goblins know little about what resides beneath the surface. There are various areas of Dargarth where natural tunnel complexes and caves extend down into the earth. In other places mines have been sunk or carved into hillsides. And there are a few places were tunnels have breached the surface... from below, and from which monsters sometimes come forth. It is suspected by some and told as stories late at night that entire lands and kingdoms of monsters exist beneath the earth; it is hoped that none will ever disturb the horrors if they do exist.

As matters of fact, there are dwarven cities which descend downward, but many have been abandoned and exist as little more than incredibly ornate ruins. The details of those that are still inhabited are little spoken about by the dwarven people. Some hazard to hypothesize that the deepest warrens were likely sealed generations ago, and even the dwarves know little about what, if anything, exists beyond the walls of their cities.

Bitter Peak is the tallest mountain upon Dargarth, and within stands an ancient dwarven city (long abandoned by those people), which is the capital of the Mercenaries of Bitter Peak. It is unknown to outsiders how deep the city beneath the mountain goes, or even how much of it the Mercenaries inhabit, or if they have ever explored the farthest extents of the city.

Rumored about by knowledgeable outsiders, beneath Raven's Hearth lies an complex of catacombs; some say that the ancestral tombs might be as extensive as the city above it. It is unknown, however, if the tombs are a single (relatively shallow) level, or if parts of it descend for many stories.

Within the bounds Great Desert lies an ancient pyramid; held by Mardur for several years, it is part of history of the ancestral peoples of the desert. As a religious site it has never been explored in living memory, and it is unknown if its rooms extend beneath the shifting sands.

In the southeast, on the tip of the lands once held by Alliance, a tunnel was bored from the deeps. Claimed by a clan of bugbears, they were encountered and defeated by Sir Byron who was leading an expedition of Bitterpeak mercenaries in the reclaiming of his home. Now a crude but fortified palisade guards the tunnel entrance, and no other threats have thus far emerged. But the depths of the tunnel has not been explored.
