Blizzard Mages are spell casters who harness the elements of winters ice to destroy their foes.

Appearance

Their tenacity in confronting the cold gives them a natural durability in battle, though some wear thick animal hides if their magic is not powerful enough.

Behaviour

The old man stoked our camp fire and threw two thick logs onto the blaze. His face was a hard line and eyes as grey and cold as the snow around us cast about the flickering shadows as though searching for something. What I could not say. After a few long moments he took a seat a pair of paces back from the now brightly crackling fire. It was several long moments during which I dared not speak that passed before the old guide answered my question. "You wish to hear of my battle with the White Caller? That is why you hired me, isn't it? I'm not really a guide. So be it. It is an old tale told many times and I don't suppose telling it one more time will matter. I can't say I care for the surroundings though." The guide cast his gaze once more beyond the circle of firelight then pulled his furs closer to him and inched closer to the warmth. Even from where I sat a goodly distance further than my guide I could feel the sting of the fire's warmth. "I was much younger when it happened. Been on a few trips and thought I knew my way around the ice. I didn't know dung from dirt. We were in a pass I'd scouted, seldom used, possibly unknown. We found out why our second night in camp." "The snow had fallen thick throughout the second day in the pass and we were forced to call a halt well before night fell. The snow fell and at first it seemed gentle, a thick flurry that would pass in hours, then we could make our way through. The winds picked up as the hours lengthened to twilight and before long the gentle flurry had become a raging blizzard and we all huddled together and prayed. That was when the White Caller struck." "We had no sentries. No man or beast could approach us through the gale, or so we thought, our thoughts turned purely to our own survival. It was utter shock when Rimmick fell, crimson staining the driving white around us. Not a man amongst us mustered the wit to move until he cut down Theris, that's when I grabbed for my hatchet. Then he said... something. The words seemed to twist and ring oddly on his tongue, half understood but alien, if that can make any sense at all. A blue haze formed around me and I could not move." "He struck down my two remaining companions without pity. I could but watch, seized immobile by his magic. Once he had killed them he wiped his blade upon Rimmick's already frozen corpse and approached me. 'If you live, tell all that this pass is mine, and I will not tolerate trespassers'." "And that, magus, is all I know of the White Callers."

Combat

Blizzard mages vary in ability in combat, but do share several common tactics. Generally they will charge into battle flinging their ice storm spells first to disable the strongest opponents while saving the lightning bolt to break a troublesome shield or disable or kill an exposed opponent. Their magical toughness does not put them on par with a true armored warrior but does grant them a measure of protection from lighter blows.
